Ebook About
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Sixth Extinction returns to humanity’s transformative impact on the environment, now asking: After doing so much damage, can we change nature, this time to save it?5 ideas for summer reading—Bill Gates, GatesNotes • “Important, necessary, urgent and phenomenally interesting.”—Helen Macdonald, The New York Times  That man should have dominion “over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” is a prophecy that has hardened into fact. So pervasive are human impacts on the planet that it’s said we live in a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene.   In Under a White Sky, Elizabeth Kolbert takes a hard look at the new world we are creating. Along the way, she meets biologists who are trying to preserve the world’s rarest fish, which lives in a single tiny pool in the middle of the Mojave; engineers who are turning carbon emissions to stone in Iceland; Australian researchers who are trying to develop a “super coral” that can survive on a hotter globe; and physicists who are contemplating shooting tiny diamonds into the stratosphere to cool the earth. One way to look at human civilization, says Kolbert, is as a ten-thousand-year exercise in defying nature. In The Sixth Extinction, she explored the ways in which our capacity for destruction has reshaped the natural world. Now she examines how the very sorts of interventions that have imperiled our planet are increasingly seen as the only hope for its salvation. By turns inspiring, terrifying, and darkly comic, Under a White Sky is an utterly original examination of the challenges we face.

Book Under a White Sky: The Nature of the Future Review :

This book feels like a collection of different environmental news stories from an on-the-scene reporter, as she explains the challenges that each region is facing. Kolbert takes you with her as she describes the situations in these local ecosystems, and the opinions and perspectives of the people that are tasked with addressing them. Rather than being a preachy, apocalyptic warning; this book simply explains the problems that real people are dealing with, and how they are attempting to manage their own local crises affecting their area. From the Chicago River to New Orleans levees; from the Nevada desert to Australian coral reefs; Kolbert reports on the challenges that scientists, fisherman, and policy-makers are facing, while describing the scenes from her first person perspective. Kolbert even describes her own attempts at bio-engineering with a CRISPR kit, and her experience with a company that sequesters CO2 into rocks to remove it from the atmosphere. The book has several diagrams and pictures that really helped me understand the environments that Kolbert was describing. Diagrams of the Chicago River's altered flow really helped me to picture the magnitude of the engineering effort and the changing of the environment. Other pictures, like one of an Australian girl holding her pet cane toad, added color and a bit of humor to an otherwise serious issue.A recurring theme in this book is the attempt of humans to change their environment, and then the attempts to undo the damage caused by short-sighted ecological interventions of the past. This book was very informative, and I found it to be a great introduction to several of these tough environmental problems that people are hard at work trying to solve. It is not a comprehensive analysis of all possible solutions, it just describes the situations so that the reader can look more into these issues if they are interested.I really enjoyed this book, and am anxious to learn more about some of these innovative new solutions to the problems people are facing around the world.
I was excited to read "Under a White Sky". Unfortunately, it seems that the author just sort of stopped writing when COVID hit. See page 197, where author laments the arrival of COVID. FOur pages later, book ends. The author even says on page 197:"Here I was, trying to finish a book about the world spinning out of control, only to find the world spinning so far out of control that I couldn't finish the book".Couldn't finish the book, but COULD publish it and sell it to people like me.The early chapters are interesting, each one covering a different topic related to man messing with nature. Good stuff. But I expect some analysis, some conclusion, something to sum it all up. It just isn't there.Topic and early chapters showed great promise. But the ending is truly lacking. And as the author alludes, unfinished.
