Ebook About In this rapturous memoir, writer and activist Laura Coleman shares the story of her liberating journey in the Amazon jungle, where she fell in love with a magnificent cat who changed her life.Laura was in her early twenties and directionless when she quit her job to backpack in Bolivia. Fate landed her at a wildlife sanctuary on the edge of the Amazon jungle where she was assigned to a beautiful and complex puma named Wayra. Wide-eyed, inexperienced, and comically terrified, Laura made the scrappy, make-do camp her home. And in Wayra, she made a friend for life. They weren’t alone, not with over a hundred quirky animals to care for, each lost and hurt in their own way: a pair of suicidal, bra-stealing monkeys, a frustrated parrot desperate to fly, and a pig with a wicked sense of humor. The humans too were cause for laughter and tears. There were animal whisperers, committed staff, wildly devoted volunteers, handsome heartbreakers, and a machete-wielding prom queen who carried Laura through. Most of all, there was the jungle—lyrical and alive—and there was Wayra, who would ultimately teach Laura so much about love, healing, and the person she was capable of becoming.Set against a turbulent and poignant backdrop of deforestation, the illegal pet trade, and forest fires, The Puma Years explores what happens when two desperate creatures in need of rescue find one another.Book The Puma Years: A Memoir Review :
This is a very easy raptor read memoir giving us an insight into 21$t Century Bolivia and, of course, into a British woman’s relationship with a New World cat.I was at once drawn into her story, in part by her self-deprecating humor (or should I use the word humor?) and by her choice of short words, in lieu of hifalutin prose.LANGUAGE: If adult language disturbs you, though, you may want to look for another story this month. As. For me, I wasn’t especially bothered by the “F” words, but I have come to understand that the frequent use of such a word by Brits is not uncommon. Still, the overuse of .the word in this otherwise fun exploration did detract just a bit of the fun.Overall, this is a four star read. I got this book because I am a tiny little bit familiar with Amazon area and wanted to learn more about the animals and the people from this region. But this book is rather a “coming of age” type of book than any other kind. The main heroine is one of the young people who failed to find a satisfactory place in typical British society and ended up as a volunteer in an animal rescue camp in Bolivia. She was one of many young volunteers, all of them somehow broken, none of them qualified for animal work, and all seeking fulfillment in contact with wild animals they knew very little about, and in each other company. After the promising and humorous beginning book gets more and more boring. There is not really much to be learned about country or animals here but plenty about psychological, romantic, and physiological dilemmas of heroine and her comrades. The sentimental way the volunteers tried to deal with animals may work with some kind of gentle dogs but was quite dangerous and irresponsible while dealing with wildlife. It was just an accident waiting to happen. It is also symptomatic that despite all the sentimentality and “fuzzy feelings” nobody bothered to clean animal poop, they just slept next to it. I was to some animal rescues in the Amazon region and they were run in a much better way. The book is very “politically correct" and portraits certain kind of young people that for one reason or another got arrested in their development into typical adults. They treated the rescue center as a kind of not formal psychological recovery camp for themselves drifting in and out of it. It seemed to work for some of them, better than sessions with psychiatrists or antidepressants. This book may be interesting to some people who are at a similar stage in their lives but it is not why I wanted to read it.The reason that I gave this book 3 stars instead of just 2 is the last part where the author describes herself, years later, as fighting a losing battle attempting to change a rescue center into a better one, where animals will be less free but also…less stressed. KUDOS for that.
